Inspired by a specific time in the late 70s to mid 80’s when artistry & inspiration met. Right before 80’s “Excess” was the norm. Different cultures & musical influences all collided for a moment in time to create what we call “Queer Culture”! B-Boys, Drag Queens, Straight, Gay, Black, White, Artists, Breakers, Dj’s, Disco, House & Hip Hop! We always strive to think & act outside the box. Adhering strongly to the word “Queer” as defined by the dictionary- (kwir) : 1. Deviating from the Expected or Normal 2. Eccentric-adv. Claire Cavanah and Rachel Venning opened the first Babeland store in 1993 in response to the lack of women-friendly sex shops in Seattle. The store offered top quality products, a pleasant place to shop, and most of all information and encouragement to women who wanted to explore their sexuality. The store's popularity with both women and men eventually led to two more stores in New York and one in Los Angeles, as well as a thriving website.
